After filling out all of that lovely new patient paperwork, we were finally called back. They did all the preliminary work and then the doctor came in (who I have to say was very great!!) and had to dialate her pupils. For those who have never had it done (including myself) they had to put 3 different eye drops in each eye. Kenna didn't like it at all, and I had to hold her down while she was fighting me, I felt horrible! They sent us out into the waiting room for 30 min or so and then called us back in.
Once we were back in the room, they had to see what prescription to make her glasses. NOTE: I have NEVER been to the eye doctor, so I had no clue what they were going to be doing. I think this is part of the reason it was so hard on me. It's kind of hard to explain what they did, but I'll try. They put a patch over one eye, which I had to hold her down for because she kept wanting to rip it off, and then had her look through certain lenses.... it seemed like it took an eternity to complete both eyes and I was holding her down the entire time. Poor girl, this was such an experience for her. Glad she is young enough to not remember it!
So, what we found out? She will need to wear glasses. The doctor did say that because we are starting her so young, there is a chance her eyesight will level out and she will not have to be in glasses the rest of her life. THAT was good news!! She will also have to wear a patch on her left eye 6 hours a day to get her to use her right eye. She has perfect vision in her left but not in her right, so she hasn't been using the right eye, thus the crossing. The patch will force her to use her right eye and make it stronger. Now, because she put up such a fight with the patch in the office, the doctor also prescribed me some of the drops they use. It will be put in her left eye once a day. (which will be easy compared to 6 drops) It will dialate her pupil and work like the patch, forcing her to use her right eye. I will probably have to end up going this route.
We will be going back in a month to see, if any, the progress she is making. I am not looking forward to it, as we have to go through it all again.... :-( However, I am very glad we are starting her with glasses now and Lord willing, her eyesight can be corrected. The doctor also said that if they don't correct it, Lasik surgery would be an option for her in the future if we wanted.
SO, please pray for my little girl that she would cooperate with the glasses and I would be a good mommy and do everything I can to get her to keep them on. Also, please pray if it is God's will, that her eyesight will be totally corrected.
I love this little girlie so much!!
